Energy Medicine or Biofield Therapy

"Biofiled therapies are noninvasive therapies in which the practitioner explicitly works with a client's biofield (interacting fields of energy and information that surround living systems) to stimulate healing responses" (Jain et. al., 2015).

Strengths of energy medicine modalities (Feinstein & Eden, 2008)

(1) Can address biological processes at their energetic foundations (reach

(2) regulates biological processes  (efficiency)

(3) fosters health and prevents illness through economically, and non-invasively application (practicality)

(4) includes easy to learn methods that can be used on an at-home, self-help basis (patient empowerment)

(5) adopts non-linear concepts consistent with distant healing, the healing impact of prayer, and the role of intention in healing (quantum compatibility), and

(6) strengthens the integration of body, mind, and spirit, resulting in focus on both healing and achieving greater well-being (holistic orientation).

Types of Energy Medicine Modalities*

  • Healing Touch:  Healing Touch is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

  • Johrei healing: Originated in Japan, is a form of spiritual healing comprising ‘energy channelling’ and light massage. The latter incorporates elements of Reiki and acupressure. Energy channelling is the direction of an intangible healing energy through the hands of the healer at a distance from the person receiving healing.

  • Pranic healing: Is an energy “no-touch” healing system based on the fundamental principle that the body has the innate ability to heal itself. Pranic Healing utilizes “life force,” “energy,” or prana to accelerate the body’s inborn ability to heal itself.

  • Reiki: Is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

  • Qigong: (pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique that involves meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises.

  • Therapeutic Touch: Therapeutic touch is based on ancient healing practices. The goal of the technique is to help people relax, relieve their pain, and help them heal faster. Therapeutic touch is thought to promote healing through restoring harmony to a person's energy fields.

  • Access Bars: Access Bars is a gentle hands-on modality that was introduced by Gary Douglas in the early 1990s. The Bars® are 32 unique points on the head that correlate to different areas and aspects of life. During an Access Bars session, a practitioner gently touches these points to release the electromagnetic charge of all thoughts, ideas, attitudes, decisions, and beliefs that may have limited you in the concerned life areas.

  • Biofield tuning: uses tuning forks to detect and correct distortions and static in the biofield (human energy field/aura). Biofield Tuning is based on the premise that the human biofield - the energy field that surrounds and permeates our bodies - is inextricably connected with our conscious and subconscious mind, including all of our memories.  All physical, mental and emotional disorders can be perceived as "dissonance" in our energy fields.  Biofield Tuning is able to diminish and resolve this dissonance and in doing so, alleviate and even eradicate the corresponding physical, mental and/or emotional symptoms.
